A MEMBER of St Annes Royal British Legion has received the Legion's greatest honour.
Spencer Leader, who is well known in Lytham and St Annes as 'the Poppy Man', got a big surprise at this month's branch meeting.
The 70-year-old was presented with a Gold Badge and certificate of appreciation for his sterling work on behalf of ex-service men and women and their dependents.
Since joining the legion at the end of his service in the Royal Army Service Corp in 1958, Mr Leader has undertaken every position for the St Annes branch, including chairman, secretary, welfare worker, poppy organizer, standard bearer, and was club steward for many years.
He is also the president of the club and branch but his finest achievement has been as poppy organiser, a position he has held for the past 32 years.
Mr Leader said: "When I took on the role in 1976 we raised a total of £400 and thanks to the help and generosity of the people of St Annes, we raised a record sum of more than £20,000 in November 2007.
"I have always felt privileged to be able to help the brave men and women who have and are still prepared to lay down their lives on behalf of us all and to try to bring comfort to their families.
"it isn't about certificates, or Gold Badges, but I feel very honoured to receive them."
Albert Cooper, branch chairman, is proud of Mr Leader and said: "Spencer is one of the most deserving people to receive the Gold badge that I have come across in my 51 years involvement in the Royal British Legion, in fact the Legion found gold when he decided to join.
"We need more Spencer Leaders."
