The much-loved 'Fiddler on the Roof' is the story of Tevyre (played by Glyn Morton)and his wife Golde (played by Barbara Kenny) and their 5 daughters.
It had always been the Jewish tradition for the matchmaker (In this case Yente, played by Mandy Hall) to arrange marriages for the girls in the village. This often meant that young girls were married to much older men because of their stability or financial position. This tradition among many others is explored and challenged in this moving and uplifting story. Arranged marriages, fathers being the head of the household, only the sons being educated, men not being allowed to dance with women etc are all traditions which are explored and challenged in this show. It is also steeped in beautiful Jewish religious traditions that have stood the test of time and we, the cast, have loved learning and respecting these traditions.
Famous songs from the show include 'If I were a Rich Man', 'Sunrise Sunset', 'Do You Love Me', 'Matchmaker', 'Miracle of Miracles' and, of course, 'Tradition'.
Lytham Operatic Society are staging the famous musical 'Fiddler on the Roof' at Lowther Pavilion Saturday 11th April- 18th (excl Sunday).
Tickets are £12 with some concessions and can be obtained from the Box Office on (01253) 658666.
