THE number of swimmers using Kirkham baths is increasing, according to a local campaigner.
Wesham Coun Simon Renwick, the only cabinet member who voted against proposals, in February, to close the baths, says it is encouraging news.

The Conservative councillor said: "I hope that new talks with town and parish councils, the YMCA and the Kirkham Splash group can reach a conclusion that sees it stay open.

"I was at the pool the other day, talking to the staff. I was delighted to be told numbers are up and more sessions are taking place. I had a swim myself and can confirm the water is lovely and warm and urge people to get in and take a dip.

"In the longer term, I think Fylde Council will have to continue to pay some money in to the pool – the only question is how much.

"I'd like us to see the council keep it open, but with Labour's capping limit on the tax we can raise, we may have to see if some money can be raised in other ways.

"More people using the pool will help, along with the management of the YMCA and asking rural Fylde's parish councils to maybe levy a small precept of £4 or £5 a year. Then, Fylde Council can pick up the balance.

"I am committed to keeping Kirkham Pool open and look forward to continuing to work with all interested people and parties to achieve that result."
