STAGE rage has broken out after a young actor lost his leading role in a forthcoming local musical.

Thomas Lowe, 10, was set to play the starring part in Oliver.

But production company Nogal Productions feared nerves would get the better of the youngster and gave him another role.

However, the boy's mother claims Nogal overreacted and says her son would have coped on stage.

Thomas, from Treales, is a pupil at The Willows Catholic Primary School, Kirkham.

Mum Emma, 30, admitted Thomas confessed to being a little nervous about the role on occasions, but said she believed it was only natural for a child to feel like that.

She said: "They have taken it off him, but he would have done it. I think they have taken it too seriously."

But Gareth Pearson, the show's co-director, choreographer and publicity officer, said the decision to demote Thomas to another role was taken after discussions with all parties.

He said: "We spoke to his mum. His mum first raised concerns and said he was very nervous and spoke about it at home. He was forgetting his lines and said there was a lot to take in."

Mr Pearson said everyone felt it was the best decision to take Oliver off him.

He said; "It was a three week process.

"We gave him the part of Charlie a few weeks ago and he was over the moon about it. He was a different kid."

But Emma said Thomas felt embarrassed and rejected by the demotion.

"He came home and his words were they didn't want him to be in it anymore," she said.

"He's really upset and doesn't understand why they would give it to him in January and then give it to someone else in May."

Thomas, dropped three weeks ago, had spent five months rehearsing for the performance at Lytham's Lowther Pavilion, which will take place in July.

Many of the children in his year five class are also taking part in the production.

Knowing the company in question in this particular story I do believe that Mrs Lowe has gone a little to far with all of this.

I do agree that it is deeply disheartning in loosing the lead role of oliver, however would she prefer her son to still perform live on stage in a smaller role that maybe he feels more confident with and really build his self confidence or run the risk of him maybe loosing all his confidence and falling to pieces infront of hundreds of on lookers. I think I know which one I would choose!!!!

She needs to take into concideration that her son is only ten and taking on a role like that in one of his first performances is a huge responsibility and that a smaller role in this production would maybe really take his confidence to the next level, and in a few years time he would take on a role like oliver and take it to new heights.

The role that the article states he has been given is a great part in this show and I don't see why she is saying (In another article in the LEP) she has wasted money on tickets for the show because would she not want to show support for her son whatever the role?????? Being on stage however big or small your part is a big deal and Im sure he would want his mum being supportive to him rather than embarassing him with being in the public eye for negative reasons.

Overall this sounds like the mother has made a mountain out of a mole hill. Support your son whatever role he has and whatever he does. A ten year old boy doesn't need rubbish like this going on.

Consider yourself sacked?? Sounds like it should be Consider yourself a Pushy Mother!!!!

As President of Nogal Productions and Producer of the show 'Oliver' I would like to add to Gareth Pearson's comments and say that we take a great pride in nurturing young talent and we would never take a decision like this lightly. Thomas is very young and the pressures of such a large and dramatic role were causing him a great deal of distress. He accepted the smaller role and was doing really well. He is a lovely lad and in time will be the star his mum wants him to be but he is not ready yet and needs to develop at his own pace. Pushing a youngster beyond their limits can cause lasting problems.

I would like to add that Mrs. Lowe has not paid out any money for tickets and now that we know Thomas will not be continuing with the role we gave him we will of course refund any costume money.
