KIRKHAM library is set to undergo a massive revamp.
The facility is one of eight libraries across the region which have been earmarked for major refurbishment by Lancashire County Council, who will spend over £1m under phase two of the Library Regenerate Programme.

Council chiefs have promised to create a modern and attractive library for Kirkham residents, with a wider range of both traditional and new services.

County Coun Anne Brown, cabinet member for Adult and Community Services, said: "We are investing heavily in developing our libraries and our Library and Information Service so it is fit for the 21st Century and, more importantly, it meets the needs and aspirations of local communities and local people.

"Our libraries should be at the heart of local communities and benefit everyone, young and old alike, not solely those who like to borrow books."

An extensive survey was carried out with Kirkham residents involving visits to local supermarkets, galas and schools in order to gain as much feedback as possible from the local community.

The results of this survey will now be utilised as the new design of the library is drawn up.

Although the plans are still in their early stage, they are thought to include new toilet facilities and the reshaping of the internal layout.

Fylde MP Michael Jack said: "This is very good news for Kirkham. I am delighted that the County Council are responding to local concern by both developing and refurbishing the library."

Work on the library will begin in the autumn.
