A PLUSH bar and restaurant is set to re-open under new management.
Ian Calvert, who runs The Edge in Poulton, has bought The Cube, Kirk-ham, and plans to re-launch it next month with wife Kelly.

The bar was the brainchild of Paul Mellor, owner of The Cube in Poulton, back in September 2007.

But it was closed and put up for sale less than a year after opening with Mr Mellor adm-itting he had not been able to devote as much time to the bar as he would have liked.

Now Mr Calvert, who has appeared as a DJ on Rock FM, Century FM and Radio Wave over the years, is hoping to make the 900 capacity bar a success.

He said: "We've done well with The Edge and really got it off the ground.

"But it is owned by Punch Taverns and myself and Kelly fancied having something of our own which we could invest in.

"It's a lovely well-positioned building and we've got our own ideas about what to do with it.

"I don't know quite what went wrong in its first incarnation, especially because Paul Mellor is a great businessman, but we got a good deal and we really believe we can do well with it."

Mr Calvert wants the bar to become one of the market town's top nightspots as well as boosting restaurant trade throughout the day.

There are also plans afoot to host conferences and business events in the venue's two large function rooms.

Other plans include hosting comedy and music nights, similar to the ones at The Edge, as well as the possibility of using the large patio area at the back of the building as a wedding reception venue.

It has also received a makeover by designers to make it more female friendly.

Mr Calvert said the bar will open without fanfare, try to work with other local businesses and give the people of Kirkham what they want.

He added: "It's not been easy for pubs in the last year or so but we believe it's on the turn."

The re-opening is expected to create around 25 jobs and the owners are also hoping to source local produce for the venue's kitchen.
