A LASTING memorial has been created for a tragic Kirkham student.
Sian Butcher, 14, (right) a pupil at Carr Hill High School, lost her battle against cancer in March.

Now, her parents, Samantha and Stuart, along with her brother, Stewart, visited the school to unveil a bench and bird feeder, built in her memory.

Mrs Butcher said: "We are happy the school wanted to do something to remember Sian. She was such a positive girl and was never worried about herself, she always thought about everyone else.

"With Sian, whatever happened it was always a case of how will I do it. She never said what am I going to do now, she just got on with things.

"Even when she was very poorly, she wrote a letter to her form at school the week before we lost her because she wanted everyone there to be OK. Sian was just a positive, happy girl."

Mr Butcher added: "Sian loved the outdoors so she would have liked the bench and want it to be a place where others can come and sit."

Assistant headteacher Paul Wallace said: "Sian was a lovely young woman, who is sadly missed by many people. She was a very popular member of the school community and her death was felt very deeply.

"I am sure Sian would have been pleased with this. And I would like to think that by doing this she will always be a part of Carr Hill.

"We are very pleased that Mr and Mrs Butcher and their family have come to school to take part in such an important ceremony and thank them very much."

He added: "Sian was a massive advocate for the environment and loved nat-ure which is why we decided to get the bench with a plaque and a bird feeder.

"They are both situated in a pleasant area of the school which will provide students and staff with somewhere quiet they can reflect and remember."

Carr Hill has also donated £300 to Derian House Children's Hospice, which head of biology Dr Mark Procter helped raise by taking part in an Ironman challenge.
