C. Bryson's disgust (Express, Jan 31) would be entirely justified if the premises on which it is based were accurate.
However, I must reassure him and all others in the borough that they are not. While Defend Lytham was founded initially to fight the Lytham Quays proposal, our remit has since widened to encompass the detailed surveillance of development threats throughout the area. With particular reference to Mr Bryson's remarks, it might be noted that, in recent weeks, we have:
• made a team visit to the Queensway development exhibition
• engaged our professional planning advisor to provide guidance on the best way to oppose the scheme at Queensway
• written to the Planning Policy Scrutiny Committee, the Development Control Committee and individual councillors for clarification and justification of their position on the Interim Housing Policy and the Growth Point Bid
• issued a statement on the dangers of building anywhere on the Moss floodplain (see www.defendlytham.com).
As a group of unpaid volunteers funded entirely by donations from those who share our ambitions to preserve the fabric of the area, we simply cannot afford to ensure that everyone is kept as informed of our activities as we would ideally like.
Set in its appropriate context, the press coverage to which Mr Bryson refers was meant to convey the need for many more people throughout the borough to become involved in ensuring that developers are not allowed to ruin it.
Alison Jack
Chairman
Defend Lytham
