ELAINE Silverwood was quite right to pull me up for not mentioning in a recent edition of Jack's Diary the question of Post Office closures in Singleton and Elswick.
I have in fact already taken action on both.
When the Post Office first announced last year its intentions to close 2,400 Sub Post Offices I wrote to all of out local Post Masters and Mistresses indicating my concerns about these proposals. Not everyone replied to my offer of help but Singleton did.
In the case of Elswick it was more difficult.
As I understood it the Post Office had already been closed as a result of a change of ownership of the village shop. None the less following letters of concern from Elswick I did write to the Post Office to see if the branch could be re-opened with new owners in charge of the shop. The response from the Post Office was non committal. New owners are now in place but I am not certain as to their current thoughts re having a Post facility in their shop.
If either of these communities, as Warton Street did right from the word go, put forward well founded case for their Sub Post Office to stay open they will of course have my full support.
