As a lifelong Lytham resident I, too, was sad to see the local Woolworths was closing down.
I and my family have shopped there for years – I even worked there part-time while at school.
My main concern, however, was Mr Miller's letter, (Express, October 29).
He stated that now Woolworths was closing, he would be forced to shop out of Lytham for "hardware and electrical goods".
Save your petrol and shop locally Mr. Miller! As a resident of Cleveland Road – just around the corner – I was surprised you hadn't noticed our shop, Lytham St Annes Electrical and DIY, on Station Road. It's been selling "hardware and electrical goods" for 11 years!
Local businesses need the support of the local community now, more than ever.
Use us or lose us!

Support fuel poverty fightI AM writing to support Macmillan Cancer Support's campaign to freeze out fuel poverty for cancer patients.
Rising fuel prices have affected many of us, but for cancer patients the effects can be even more keenly felt. Spending longer periods at home during recovery is just one of the reasons cancer patients have increased energy needs. Coupled with the effects of the treatment itself this means that cold really is colder with cancer.
In a recent Macmillan survey, two thirds of cancer patients struggling financially said paying fuel bills is their biggest money worry. Cancer patients face higher bills at a time when their income has often decreased, but do not automatically qualify for help.
Nobody with cancer should be left in the cold this winter because they can't afford to heat their home. Macmillan is urging the Government to extend the winter fuel payment to cancer patients. This annual payment of up to £400 is currently paid to everyone over 60, but could bring immediate help to cancer patients struggling with additional fuel costs.
If you're struggling to cope with the financial effects of cancer visit www.macmillan.org.uk or call 0800 500 800 to find out more and get hold of a copy of Macmillan's Help with the cost of cancer booklet and managing fuel costs fact sheet.

Referendum on Europe
MINDFUL of the fact that hundreds of thousands of people died in two world wars to preserve UK sovereignty, would not the significance of the Prime Minister signing up to the EU Reform Treaty (aka the Constitution) last December, make past and future Remembrance Sundays completely and utterly insignificant and meaningless?
UK sovereignty is being relinquished to an organisation whose auditors have not "signed off" the books now for 14 years. And how many times can you look around nowadays to see the EU flag fluttering alongside the Union flag?
Surely there needs to be more consultation with the general public. Oliver Crowmwell said that it is the people who decide – not Parliament! A referendum is still necessary.

Support for free bus pass
COUNCILLOR Coombes has again used your newspaper to illustrate Conservative Party opposition to the free bus travel scheme for pensioners.
The Fylde Labour Party welcomed the introduction of this scheme which brings a well deserved extra benefit to our pensioners.
Mr Coombes clearly does not appreciate that the pensioners travelling to Lytham and St Annes will spend money in local shops and cafes, to the benefit of the local economy! Also, by using buses they help relieve traffic and parking congestion.
This clearly shows the old legend "Tories know the cost of everything but the value of nothing" still sums up the attitudes of the Conservative Party.

Young people a real credit
WE hear so much about the bad behaviour of the youth of today and yet so much of the good youngsters do is often overlooked.
As an example of the latter may I drew your attention to the young Cadets who - once again – have given their time to help collect money on behalf of the Poppy Appeal.
As someone who served for almost four decades in the Royal Air Force as well as being a member of the Royal British Legion, I congratulate their efforts. We need look no further to see a fine example of where youth is serving the community.

Welcome at revamp pub
WHAT a Christmas treat we have to look forward to in St Annes with the massive £500,000 investment which will see the popular family favourite pub The Admiral re-open.
Thanks to the Spirit Group for providing the finance for this welcome venture. In the present financial climate it's refreshing to see such investment in our town.
St Annes has a generous share of pubs which are mostly run by branded pub chains. However I look forward to a reliable, genuine, warm welcome from our hosts Emma and Tony who have enjoyed over seven happy years at the Admiral and I can say that no other pub in St Annes has enjoyed such a long term management. The Admiral is unique in having some 40 years history and is well managed with a focus on being a local rather than a carbon copy of some several hundreds of a pub chain which can become quite boring and predictable at times.
Cheers to Emma and Tony for all their hard work and I know St Annes will greet the 'gem on the corner' when it opens the doors for more years of good food, entertainment and a genuine welcome.
If you're looking for a friendly locals' pub, take a walk to the Admiral. It may be enjoying a new look, but its heart is still beating and bursting with what every pub should enjoy . . . atmosphere!
