IN its present form, Lytham Club Day has been around for 113 years – spanning two centuries.
It has witnessed many changes, yet has still managed to survive.
Lytham Club Day 2008 takes place on Saturday, June 28.
The town is closed to traffic from 8.30am through to 12.30pm (approximately). Children and adults roam the streets in fancy dress and the town is alive with the hustle and bustle of tableaux, decorated cycles, horses, local traders, bands and of course Lytham Rose Queen and visiting queens from the Fylde.
Club Day is for old and young alike, with a feast of morris dancers performing all over town.
A parade of vintage cars heads the main procession and Lytham Rose Queen makes a short stop at the cenotaph laying a wreath in remembrance of the dead from the two world wars.
The streets are lined with spectators and the sound of applause and cheers can be heard as bands and floats pass by.
The procession disperses at about 12.30pm, but the day is far from over.
At 1pm, Cubbin's Fair opens and at 1.30pm afternoon entertainment gets underway at Lowther Gardens, where the crowning of the Rose Queen, the mammoth draw, the Tomes Trophy for Visiting Queens and the presentation of the trophies to the winning classes all take place.
Later in the day, it is time to visit the many restaurants, cafes and pubs for a bite to eat, before the festivities start again.
At 7pm it's dancing in the street, with music for the Family Barn Dance provided by the Toll Bar Band; then at 9pm, a change of pace as the Steel Band, Panama, takes over, specialising in a cocktail of Caribbean Music, calypso, soaco, reggae, merengue, romantic ballads, swing and pop.
The day only comes to a close at 11pm.
Further information is available on www.lythamclubday.co.uk or by e-mailing info@lythamclubday.co.uk.
Lytham Club Day organisers are still on the hunt for marshals to help out at the event.
The marshals are needed to ensure that nobody drives past barriers which are erected on closed roads during the parade.
