THE formation of a Lytham Town Council took a step closer this week.
Lytham and Ansdell councillors revealed they are setting up a steering group to look into the idea.
Coun Richard Fulford-Brown, chairman of the new group, said it would consider the "pros and cons".
St Annes and Kirkham both have their own town cou
ncils.
Coun Fulford-Brown said: "As councillors we have to be honest, we held back because we felt personally it wasn't necessary, but there's pressure and some financial advantages of whether we should have a town council – maybe we could apply for various grants.
"We are looking to see whether it would be to our advantage and the residents' advantage."
He said Fylde Borough Council leader John Coombes had "positively encouraged" the idea.
The other councillors involved in the move include vice-chairman David Eaves, Ben Aitken, Bill Thompson, county councillor Tim Ashton, Brenda Ackers and Elizabeth Clarkson.
If it goes ahead it is expected that the councillors on the steering group will put their names forward for selection as town councillors.
Barbara Mackenzie, chairman of St Annes Town Council, welcomed the move.
She said: "We have been saying for a very long time they should be parished because the Government is wanting to give more power to local councils, so I think it is a good idea if that's what they have decided to do."
