The event, organised by the Blackpool and district branch of Soroptimist International, included a five-course meal and entertainment, as well as a charity auction.

There was the traditional piping in of the haggis and toast to honour poet Robert ‘Rabbie’ Burns.

The night, which featured a prize for the best attire, was raising money for Streetlife, the local Soroptimist’s chosen charity for the year.

Streelife runs a Blackpool-based refuge for young people who find themselves in dire straits – it offers an emergency night-shelter with beds, staffed by two workers each night, and internet access, information, advice and guidance.

There is also a day centre which offers drop-in sessions, including surgeries held by local agencies. Young people can access cheap, hot food, showers, one-to-one sessions and informal education.

The Soroptimist club is involved in many local community and voluntary activities. During the last few years, it has provided properties for Women’s Refuge, as well as collecting items for those by those in refuges.
