Ambitious proposals to transform a derelict platform into housing at a Fylde train station have been revealed.
Four bungalows and a detached two-storey property could be built on the former southbound platform at St Annes Railway Station.
If approved, the homes would be built on a 12m by 93m area of land, with access provided to the properties at the end of St Annes Road East and Glen Eldon Road, which could involve the demolition of part of a large red brick boundary wall.
Vernon Smith, committee member for the Blackpool and Fylde Rail Users Association, welcomed the bid, but hoped councillors would look at retaining some of the platform for future use.
He added: “The line has been an eyesore for quite some time.
“Anything better than the current state of affairs would be welcomed.
“We would want a minimum width (between housing and the track) for it to be used as a railway platform in the future – we want a greater frequency on the line, somewhere for passing places.
“There has been an increase in riders and we want more services between here and Preston.”
The station featured a two-track system up until the 1980s, but when the line was reduced to one track, most of the station was demolished and a new ticket office built in 1986, which remains to this day.
As part of the application, it has been recommended each home has ‘improved’ glazing to provide sound reduction and an acoustic fence should be built to avoid noise disturbance from commercial premises.
Alan Pinder, Fylde Council’s planning officer, who has recommended the scheme is granted, said: “The site is considered to be a sustainable location with good access to essential services and good public transport links, and the proposed development would bring into use an area of land that has lain vacant and neglected for some years.”
The site application will be reviewed by Fylde Council’s development management committee from 10am on July 30 at Fylde Town Hall.
