AN application for homes in Warton on land neighbouring a controversial village store plan has been welcomed.
Developer Darrell Brooks has submitted an application to Fylde Council to build 18 houses off Post Lane, in Warton.
The application comes just days after the firm re-submitted a bid to build two retail units on the neighbouring former George’s Garage site on Lytham Road.
Coun Sue Ashton, of Warton and Westby, said an increase in new families in Warton is what the village needs.
She said: “I’ve met with a planning officer over these proposals, and there really is no objection to the plans.
“I am in agreement, as are several other councillors. The land is brownfield, not green, and there is no reason why the plans for the homes should be rejected.
“Warton needs an influx of new, young families. “The site off Post Lane clearly can’t remain as it is and the homes are something the area needs.”
The site, previously a petrol filling station and car sales garage, is currently derelict and the proposed homes would be a mix of three-bedroom semi-detached and mews houses.
Coun Ashton is also supporting the plans for retail development at the derelict site.
She added: “The plans are for a much smaller supermarket than first proposed. This little shop will have passing trade from people walking by. I don’t see it becoming a large store, increasing traffic, which is what has happened with the LIDL development in Lytham. That store has had a big impact in the area.”
“I wouldn’t want to see the site left unused and become something of an eyesore either, much like the way the Conservative Club was in St Annes until a few weeks ago.”
A design statement submitted to the council by Darrell Brooks states: “The use of the vacant site for the proposed residential development will provide new three bedroom homes and will improve the character of the surrounding area.”
