Plans to build a solar farm which could power 2,500 homes in Fylde are set to be unveiled.

Solar energy firm Lightsource Renewable Energy is inviting residents to get involved in proposals for a new solar farm off Peel Road, in Westby.

The proposals for the site, on land adjacent to Peel Road to the south of the Blackpool and Fylde Industrial Estate, are still in the early stages and Lightsource is hoping to speak to residents and utilise local knowledge and ideas to help refine the plans.

Conor McGuigan, business development director at Lightsource, said: “This site is ideally situated close to a large substation and connection point to the National Grid, as well as a large industrial area to the north.

“Views into the proposed site would be minimal and extra planting would be put in place wherever needed to provide further screening. The passive nature of the solar farm will mean that agricultural activities can continue on site. It is this ability to generate clean, safe electricity whilst maintaining a respect for rural traditions that makes solar power such a viable renewable energy source.”

A biodiversity management plan will also form part of the scheme and Lightsource’s planning team is currently working with ecologists to determine suitable enhancements for the site, which could help attract birds and other wildlife.

Mr McGuigan added: “In addition to gaining important feedback from the surrounding community, we want to give any residents an opportunity to ask any questions they may have about the development or solar energy in general. It’s a great chance to get involved and to help refine the plans. We would also encourage anyone who can’t attend the community event to visit our website where the plans can be viewed and suggestions for the proposals can be put forward.”

The plans will be unveiled at a community information evening on August 14 from 5.30pm to 8pm, at the Villa Country House Hotel, Moss Side Lane, in Wrea Green.
