School Road in South Shore will be shut to traffic in both directions between the junction with Midgeland Road and the Cropper Road roundabout while United Utilities carries out repairs to the carriageway.

Restrictions have been in place on that stretch over the summer while the water company has been upgrading drinking water pipes.

A spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We have finished the work on the water pipe but there is damage to the road itself which needs to be repaired.

“As a result we are having to close the road this weekend.”

Traffic is being diverted via Cropper Road, Progress Way and Midgeland Road.

The work is part of a £13m scheme to clean and refurbish around 17km of water pipes between the Warbreck Hill roundabout in Bispham and Westby Reservoir.

Meanwhile United Utilities is set to impose further traffic restrictions on Midgeland Road from Monday, where new sewers are being laid.

A one-way system already in place between the junction with Progress Way and Roxburgh Road will be extended to the junction with Highfield Road, allowing traffic to travel northwards only.

This is expected to be in place until December.

Work was delayed after engineers found the sewer repairs were more complex than at first thought, meaning both phases of the road are now being done at the same time.

Stanley ward councillor Jason Roberts has called for the scheme to be completed as quickly as possible. He said: “This will have a large impact on the estate off Roxburgh Road and minimising its time will be key to residents.”
