The dog - a sandy-coloured whippet - was found wrapped in a black bin liner beneath bags of household rubbish.

Mark Mennell, who made the grim discovery at the back of his home, said the poor dog was “very skinny and full of fleas”.

Learning of the dog’s sad fate on Facebook, local woman Kissaya Ridings, 23, made her way to the alley with a friend. The pair found the whippet bundled in a blanket on the ground. They wrapped the pup in fresh blankets and drove 20 miles to an out-of-hours vets in Preston in search of help.Learning of the dog’s sad fate on Facebook, local woman Kissaya Ridings, 23, made her way to the alley with a friend. The alley is gated at both ends between Chesterfield Road and Clevedon Road, but the gates had been left open on Sunday, noted residents.

It was reported to Lancashire Police but the force said it was a matter for the RSPCA.

“It was heartbreaking”

“It was a whippet-type dog and very skinny. It looked like it had been starved to death, it was so sad.

“I just didn’t want the poor thing to be left alone there. I knew we had to get him somewhere where he could be treated with respect.

“We took blankets with us and my friend carried him to my car. We called around for vets who would take him and luckily the vets in Preston offered to take him.

“The staff were amazing. They said he was chipped, so hopefully the RSPCA will be able to trace the owners.”

The RSPCA were approached for comment.
