Council chiefs consider bid to extend school

The governors at Mayfield Primary School have applied for a single storey extension at the St Leonard’s Road East centre, to create a new office and a canopy to the main entrance.

The proposals also include internal changes, to create a new “secure entrance lobby”.

A design and access statement submitted to Lancashire County Council said the changes would create a “more welcoming” entrance to visitors, and would tie in with new external works.

It said: “The existing entrance is not very visible or welcoming to visitors and the foyer is very cramped.

“This lack of room has led to visitors having to sit on the school side of the security doors, thus having access to the remainder of the school and in turn the staff and pupils.

“The proposal will highlight the entrance and provide a much larger and more welcoming entrance with a new reception counter and space for visitors to sit and wait after being vetted and security checked by reception staff.

“This proposal will tie in with the external works project recently undertaken, which formed a new pedestrian access from St Patrick’s Road North.

“The new pedestrian access is directly opposite to the proposed new entrance.”

It said the proposed extension would be to the north side of the existing school buildings.

A decision on the application is due to be made under delegated powers by officers at Lancashire County Council.
