Poetry lesson is a real hoot for juniors

Literacy classes got a whole lot more fun when a teacher-with-a-difference visited AKS .

The entire junior department was in raptures as poet Paul Cookson “amazed and delighted” his young pupils with his special brand of performance poetry.

Following an assembly which taught six ‘call and respond’ poems with memorable actions, he worked with each class to create new poetry which the children performed for each other in an end-of-the-day assembly.

Some of Paul’s poetry had already been written and rehearsed, some was created spontaneously as a collaboration between the children and himself.

Everyone, from the tiny new starters in the reception class to the Year sixes were involved in the day.

A spokesman for the Lytham-based schopol said the event was a big hit.

He added: “Paul’s remarkable insight into school and family life was flavoured with the kind of humour which appeals most to junior school children (and their teachers!)

“He kept us smiling all day long.”
