Ivy Nunnerley celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Penwortham Grange and Lodge Care Home.

She was joined by staff, her family and South Ribble Mayor, Linda Woollard and her consort, Alistair.

Ivy was born in Warrington and her first job was as a butcher. She married husband James in 1939 and they moved to Wigan a few years later, where they owned a newsagents in Park Road. The couple also lived in Blackpool and Lytham.

James died in 2004, aged 90, and Ivy moved to sheltered accommodation in Andsell.

She relocated to Penwortham Grange five years ago to be near her only son, Keith, two grandchildren, five great grandchildren and great-great granddaughter.

Keith, 72, said: “Mum has kept herself busy as she had a number of jobs, including being a seamstress and she worked at Premium Bonds.

“She has Alzheimer’s but she is doing well. Staff at the care home are doing a great job looking after her.

“It is absolutely fantastic she has reached 100. We are really proud of her. The family came to celebrate with her and she had a great time. We were delighted to invite the Mayor, who is a family friend.”
