The latest junior Parkrun at Park View 4U Lytham was dedicated to the 10-year-old pupil of Clifton Primary School who died of meningitis in December - and 139 youngsters, all clad in orange, turned out, with donations raising £245.30 to the Edward Dee Forever Fund for Meningitis Now.

It was followed later in the day by a danceathon event at Fylde District Scout Headquarters in St Annes.

That featured a variety of stalls as well as dance routines galore for the youngsters taking part and raised £268.35.

Edward’s mum Elizabeth Dee said “It was a lovely gesture that the fourth junior Parkun was dedicated to Edward. He would have loved to be a part of such an event.

“We were really touched that so many of his friends and the wider community came out to support it. It was lovely to see so much orange being worn.

“Edward’s death has affected the community as a whole. So many people are missing him personally, and want to get involved to help the charity Meningitis Now because of that personal connection to Edward, but the wider community has come together to help those who knew him, to help the charity and to find out more about the disease.

“The community spirit and the coming together of so many people is heartwarming.”

Julie Norman, park ranger at Park View 4U, said: “We were delighted to see so many children taking part in the Parkrun and completing the 2k course.

“It was only our fourth junior Parkrun and it was definitely our largest turnout so far.

“It felt like a fitting tribute to Edward as he was very competitive and loved sport,

“We thought it would be a good way for his friends to all get together and have fun taking part in something that Edward would approve of.”
