Beacons to light up for Queen

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh arrive at Blackpool Opera House for the Royal Variety Performance in 1955

The county will be lighting beacons on Thursday as part of the celebrations which are taking place across the country.

A chain of 1,000 beacons will be lit across Britain and the world, starting with the first at Windsor Castle, which the Queen will light herself.

In Lancashire, there will be official beacons lit at The Mount at Fleetwood, lit at 7.30pm and Fairhaven Lake in Fairhaven (7.45).

Other venues include Rivington Pike, near Bolton; Beacon Country Park in West Lancashire; Clitheroe Castle; Bentham, near Lancaster and Earby in Pendle.

The Rivington Pike beacon will be lit at 8.30pm. It is only accessible on foot for those wanting to get up close to the event.

Here, there will be a short ceremony, with music from Skelmersdale Prize Band.

The Queen’s diary of engagements for her birthday also includes a walkabout near Windsor Castle.

She will unveil a plaque to mark The Queen’s Walkway, a four-mile self-guided walking trail, designed by The Outdoor Trust of well-wishers.

She will then head out on the birthday walkabout.
