Bloom plea for champion bid

THE seeds are being sown for Lytham in Bloom’s biggest bid for glory yet – and your cash help is needed.
After being judged small coast resort category winner and awarded a gold medal in Britain In Bloom last year, Lytham is one of five contenders for the most prestigious national award available – the Royal Horticultural Society’s Champion of Champions.
The judges will visit in August and Lytham In Bloom, a registered charity made up entirely of volunteers, is making its first-ever public appeal for cash aid to ensure the town looks its very best.
“To win Champion of Champions would be a fantastic achievement,” said Lytham In Bloom chairman Jim Leak.
“It would produce substantial benefits for the town and for the whole of Fylde in terms of national press coverage which would obviously attract significant additional visitors.
“Up to now we have relied on cash from coffee mornings and other such events, but because of our success in 2012, the demands and expectations have been raised significantly and to create the additional wow factor which will be needed, we are looking for additional funding and support.
“It is a community effort and we want to do everything we can to enhance the town.
“This will be the first time we have been up against such a wide variety of towns and it is the biggest national honour available.
“We have already been planning what we want to do to impress the judges and need more large flower displays as well as making sure the town looks its tidiest.
“It will be the most in-depth judging we have faced and we want to make sure everything is absolutely right.”
Lytham will be up against Hern from the Channel Islands, Halstead in Essex, North Berwick in Scotland and Stranghow, North Yorkshire in the Champion of Champions.
As they prepare for their unprecedented glory bid, Lytham In Bloom volunteers have been busy in recent weeks helping to improve the look of the unused section of Lytham station and that work is expected to be complete by the end of next month.
