A LETTER from Winston Churchill to the leader of Fylde Council is up for auction on the

Internet.

And the note, confirming Churchill’s appointment to sign the Council’s Distinguished Visitors’ Book, is expected to go for more than £1,000.

It reads: “I shall be staying at the Clifton Hotel in your borough from Thursday until Saturday and, in view of your kind invitation, I and my daughter, Miss Mary Churchill, will be pleased to visit the Town Hall and sign the distinguished visitors’ book.

“I shall be much-pressed during my visit to Blackpool as, not only do I have the freedom ceremony on Friday, October 4, but also much political work in connection with the party conference.

“I hope, therefore, you do not mind if I don’t stay for more than five minutes.”

The typed letter, on ‘28, Hyde Park Gate, London SW7‘ headed paper, measuring 8” x 10” is signed by the former Prime Minister with additional hand written annotations.”

A spokesman for PFC Auctions, the auction house behind the sale, said: “It’s a really interesting lot for sale.

“The letter is addressed to Councillor James Simpson JP, the Mayor of Lytham St Annes and refers to Churchill visiting the town to sign ‘the distinguished visitors book’. The letter is accompanied by a six-inch by eight-inch photograph of Churchill signing the visitors book, surrounded by onlookers.

“And the vendor has provided a letter of provenance detailing how the items came into their possession.”

The auction can be seen at www.pfcauctions.com.
