Conmen callers on prowl
TV LICENSING have given out advice on how to detect bogus callers - after reports of Warton homes being targeted by two men posing as TV license inspectors.
Over the past few weeks, a number of residents have been visited by the men, who approach the houses on foot stating they are TV license inspectors and asking if they can come in to check on the television.
But TV Licensing have say that residents can follow simple steps to check the validity of the caller.
A spokesperson for TV Licensing said: "All genuine TV Licensing enquiry officers carry a security card with a helpline number (0844 800 6747) that people can call to verify their identity.
"For anyone who may be concerned when they receive a visit from one of our enquiry officers, there is also a password system which can offer additional confirmation of identity.
"The password will only be known by you and the enquiry officer, to give you additional peace of mind. This password can be arranged by contacting TV Licensing on 0844 800 6747".
It is also believed the same males have also stopped people who are out walking their dogs, asking them if they have seen a small dog which has escaped.
Once engaged in conversation, the males have tried to obtain details of where the person lives before driving off.
The males are both described as Asian, of average height and with dark hair.
If residents think that they have been targeted by these males, they should contact police on (01253) 293933.
