Councillor questions hostel snub

A ST Annes councillor has questioned the police's decision to object to proposals for a new hostel.

Karen Buckley, councillor for the St Leonard's Ward, believes that the police are wrong to use crime figures from hostels in Blackpool to make a decision for the one in St Annes.

Coun Buckley said: "I would like to ask why the police are using these figures from hostels in Blackpool, when the circumstances for the hostel in St Annes is completely different.

"The hostels in Blackpool are nothing like the one being proposed and aren't even run by the group wanting to build on St David's Road."

In a letter to the Express Coun Karen Buckley on January 19 says

I was, and remain, very concerned about the Police's response to the planning application brought by Muir Group.

In my statement to the planning committee last Wednesday I raised concerns about crime and also raised the issue of how to ensure speedy eviction of tenants should they become a nuisance.

It was my view that if the committee believed that safety and security of the neighbouring residents would be compromised, then the application should be rejected.

The Planning Committee, after hearing evidence and deliberating on the matter for some 4 hours, passed the application by 11 votes to 4.

I know that many of the residents I represent are very unhappy with this decision.

However, as one of their Ward Councillors, my job is now to do my best to ensure that, if the development is built, the project is well managed and referrals are made on the strictest of terms.
