St Annes Mayor Coun Angela Jacques opens the two new digital screens at The Island cinema

FYLDE’S cinema has joined the digital revolution.

The Island, St Annes, which opened under new ownership 18 months ago, has gone partially digital due to growing pressures within the industry to stop producing films in a traditional 35mm format.

Two of the four screens at the seafront complex are now digital – and St Annes Town mayor Coun Angela Jacques went along to cut the ribbon on the new facilities.

General manager Linda Wong Hunter said: “We are thrilled that two of our screens have gone digital – and it is very exciting news for our customers.

“It means we can continue to screen the most up-to-date blockbuster movies, but at the same time we have not forgotten our roots, as two of the screens will still remain running on 35mm film reels for a little longer.”

Coun Jacques said: “I was delighted to be invited to go along and cut the ribbon.

“It is wonderful for St Annes’ cinema to have the most up-to-date facilities.”

The Island complex is built on the site of the old St Annes outdoor swimming baths and was originally built as an indoor play area and showbar.

After the original cinema was closed, along with a bowling alley, amusement arcade and restaurant by its previous owners in 2009, screens reopened on the site in the summer of 2011 under new owners PDJ Management, run by West Midlands-based businessman Paul Jervis, who promised exciting new developments such as the new digital projection.

As well as low prices, The Island also runs features such as bargain Mondays, offers of discounted admission on Wednesdays for its loyalty card members and silver screen showings on Wednesday afternoons.

And Linda has announced that January will be a whole bargain month, with special offers on the latest films. “It is important to give the people of St Annes and Fylde a cinema they can be really proud of,” she said. The Island also hosted events during the inaugural St Annes Music and Arts Festival last September.
