The Home-Start Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre store has opened on St Albans Road, to raise vital funds to allow the charity to continue its important work supporting young families.

Mr Menzies said: “I was delighted to be able to attend the opening of this shop, which will help Home-Start Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre continue giving support to those in need.

“While people may be aware I have recently raised some concerns over the proliferation of charity shops on our high streets, I believe this type of store strikes the right balance in raising money for this worthwhile local organisation in the right location.

“The shops I have concerns over are those national or international charities, which sometimes have more than one or two shops in prime locations in our town centres and are potentially making it impossible for small, independent businesses to compete.

“Some of these shops stock new products in competition with other local traders, receive up to 80 per cent business rate relief, are staffed with volunteers and are able to sign up to long leases which no new retailers would be able to risk.

“I wish Home-Start Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre the very best of luck with their new endeavour and would encourage people to support this store as much as they can. The organisation provides excellent support for families facing difficulties and I am proud of the fact I am patron of the charity.”

Along with donations pf items for the shop, organisers at Home-Start Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre need volunteers to work in the shop between Wednesday and Saturday. Details from (01253) 728615.
