A TEENAGE actor has taken the lead in the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat – ahead of his brother Joseph!

Harry McLafferty, 16, will play the title role in the production by St Annes’ Our Lady Star of the Sea Youth Theatre while 17-year-old Joseph appears as his brother in the story, Judah.

“You can imagine the confusion at rehearsals,” said a spokesman for the Youth Theatre, which presents the much-loved musical at Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Centre, St Annes, for four performances from tonight.

Harry and Joseph both attend AKS School and have been members of the Youth Theatre since their days as pupils at Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School.

Both have earned plaudits for their performances in various productions, including a number staged by St Annes’ Clifton Academy, most recently Fame Jr.

Joseph, who played the Artful Dodger in last year’s Our Lady Youth Theatre production of Oliver! while Harry was Mr Sowerby the undertaker, has already made his TV debut, in the BBC daytime drama Doctors.

But Harry was the choice for the Joseph title role – and has taken to it with immense enthusiasm. “It suits him perfectly and both brothers are really enjoying their roles,” added the Youth Theatre spokesman.

Along with a substantial cast, the production, directed by Michelle Cuffe with Len Hampson as musical director, will feature the Our Lady Star of the Sea Primary School Choir.
