Pier frontage all set for a revamp

A THIRD phase of improvements are set to go ahead at St Annes Pier.

Illuminated columns, new surfacing and ornamental bollards will be installed at the front of the landmark, which opened to the public in 1885.

It continues to be a prime attraction, despite losing its seaward end to a devastating fire in the 1970s.

Following improvements made by the Pier Company, the Fylde Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) will invest some of its £75,000 earmarked for Promenade improvements, on the forecourt.

LSP chairman Bernard Whittle said: “The pier and forecourt are a focal point of the Prom and town centre.

“The Pier Company has spent a lot of money recently on a new verandah at the front of the building to give it a Victorian look, and also on new lights.

“We and the Council will be involved in a third phase of environmental improvements in the vicinity.

“The surfacing under the verandah will be improved and the square brick pillars around the car park will also be replaced with ornamental bollards and small sections of wall. We expect to install two illuminated columns as gateposts at the entrance to the car park.”

Pier bosses also plan to open up two storage rooms at the attraction into a tea room and shops. The LSP will then look at improving landscaping around St Annes’ mini golf course and North Promenade car park.

Mr Whittle added: “The promenade is loved by residents and thousands of visitors and is looking very good again.

“The improvements to the front of the pier will crown the new look.”
