One in four resort youngsters are overweight or obese by the time they start reception, with that figure rising to almost four in 10 by the end of primary school.

In the London boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, one in 10 reception children are overweight or obsese, while two in 10 Year Six pupils are, the National Statistics publication revealed.

It said: “The proportion of children reporting they consumed five or more [fruit and vegetable] portions a day varied from 48 per cent in the most deprived areas to 58 per cent in the least.”

Some 28 sandgrownuns – eight men and 20 women – were admitted to hospital with a primary diagnosis of obesity in 2014/15, the report also found.
