A top junior athlete has been recognised for his outstanding sporting achievements by being named on a prestigious awards shortlist.

Wheelchair athlete and AKS Lytham student Isaac Towers, 15, has been shortlisted for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2013 award, earning a place alongside the likes of Manchester United starlet Adnan Januzaj and Solheim Cup golfer Charley Hull.

AKS Lytham headteacher said: “Everyone at AKS was absolutely thrilled to hear that Isaac has been nominated for the BBC ‘Young Sports Personality of the Year’ award.

“He has enjoyed a fantastic year of sporting achievements and shows an admirable commitment to school life as well as being an excellent and supportive role model for his peers. We are so proud of Isaac and are backing him all the way.”

Isaac is already one of the best wheelchair racers in the world and has broken every national T34 age-group record from 100m to 5,000m.

As well as his individual achievements, he has been included in the World Class Podium Potential Programme, which comprises of athletes who UK Sport believe have a realistic medal-winning capability at the Paralympics in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

The shortlist of 10 will be reduced to a top three on December 12, before the winner is named on December 15.

Past winners of the award include Andy Murray, Theo Walcott and Tom Daley.
