Organisers of the St George’s Day Festival are calling for all Georges and Georginas to put themselves forward to take part in their parade to celebrate their namesake.
The parade, which starts and finishes at Lowther Gardens, takes place on Saturday, April 26, and is part of a five-day festival extravaganza to get people in the region celebrating all things English.
Anyone with a first or last name of George, or Georgina needs to bring their passport with them and register at Lowther Gardens at 10am before the parade through the centre of Lytham starts at 11am.
Everyone taking part will receive a T-shirt saying ‘I am George’.
In addition, all Georges or Georginas will be entered into a draw to win two FA Cup final tickets, a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce for the day, plus dinner for four at Henry’s Bar & Grill.
The parade will bring together all members of the community and will feature a classic car procession and brass bands, as well as several floats, one of which will be from Pear Tree specialist school. There will also be prizes for the best float and best themed St George’s Day car.
The St George’s Day Festival is now in its sixth year.
The walk is just one of a host of activities, which also include a comedy night, tea dance, black tie gala dinner and a family fun day.
Festival president David Haythornthwaite said: “As a country we should be celebrating our own special day, and what better way to promote that than by holding our very own St George’s Festival. The event not only helps local businesses and brings new visitors to the area, but also supports two very worthwhile charities – ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and Trinity Hospice.
“We’d encourage everyone called George to participate in the parade in what will be a great day for all.”
The festival begins with a flag raising ceremony on Lytham Green on April 23. On April 24, there’s a comedy evening in the marquee on The Grees.
Friday 25 sees a St George’s Lunch in the marquee before the grand gala dinner on April 26.
A family fun day takes place on Sunday April 27, as well as the inaugural Run Lytham 10k race. And there’s a golf competition taking place too.
