THE organisers of the St George’s Day Festival on Lytham Green have pledged this year’s five-day festival will be the biggest and best yet – with more events than ever before alongside the traditional flag-raising ceremony.

The first event of the festival is a new one; a Tea Dance at the Sea on April 24, from 1pm to 4pm, with the Bill Barrow Quartet and Lynne Fox.

That night sees the return of the ever-popular comedy night with Phil Walker, Greg Cook, Mike Newall and Jamie Sutherland.

April 25 sees another new event with the inaugural St George’s Day Golf Tournament, at Lytham Green Drive Golf Club with tee off for teams of four from 7am and a sportsman’s dinner – with an as-yet un-named speaker from 7pm.

The traditional St George’s Day lunch takes place on April 26, and the black tie gala dinner is set for April 27.

The dinner includes a three-course meal, entertainment from the Ian Hooper band, and the chance to see the Beating the Retreat following a Champagne reception.

Festival founder David Haythornthwaite said: “This year the St George’s Festival is going to be bigger and better than ever before.

“It’s really going to put Lytham on the map.

“We have a five-day festival planned with the traditional ball and family fun day, a new golf dinner, an afternoon tea and the ever-popular comedy night.

“With the support of Lytham’s businesses and residents, this festival has grown over the years and we’re determined that this one will be the best yet.

“There will also be the raising of the flag on Lytham Green to mark St George’s Day – the reason behind the festival in the first place.”

And there’s high hopes the new-look festival will smash previous year’s fund-raising efforts. The charities which will benefit from this year’s festival are soldiers’ charity ABF, Donna’s Dream House and Trinity Hospice.

Mr Haythornthwaite added: “Over the past four years we have raised more than £70,000 for charities we plan to raise that figure this year alone”.
