An official at the coroner’s office confirmed the woman’s death had been reported to the coroner. An inquest is expected to be opened on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the sand opposite the New Mayfair Hotel, between the mirror ball and Starr Gate tram depot, after the woman’s body was discovered.

Coastguard workers from Lytham attended shortly before 10.30am and helped secure the scene and search for evidence.

They then helped transport the body to a private ambulance waiting nearby, it was understood.
