BUILDING work on Fylde Scouts’ new £495,000 headquarters has started.
Fylde area Scouts’ president Tom Westall performed the ground-breaking ceremony to signal the start of building work on the two-storey structure which will replace the previous HQ destroyed last year in an arson attack.
Mr Westall, now 89, played a key role in establishing the original HQ more than 40 years ago when he was Fylde Scouts District Chairman, along with then District Commissioner Stan Hockney.
Mr Hockney’s widow Jean was also at the new HQ ceremony, along with Fylde Mayor and Mayoress Couns Howard and Karen Henshaw.
District Commissioner Mike Smith said: “This is a truly historic day for Fylde Scouts.’’ Mr Westall added: “After the sadness of the fire, we will have a super building.”
The construction work, by J Wareing and Son of Wrea Green, is set to take 30 weeks. Dormitory facilities for 60 will include a room dedicated to the Express and its readers after your help with fund-raising, still ongoing.
