A Fylde weightlifter will be aiming for world glory as he travels to Germany for an international competition.
Fresh from winning three gold medals at the British Championships in March, Yiannis Verenakis, 21, will compete in the squat and bench press at the World Powerlifting Championships in Dusseldorf starting Friday.
Yiannis, who lives in Hodder Drive, St Annes and works for Fylde Coast YMCA said he would look to use the event to build experience and paid tribute to his coaches.
He added: “In the squat I am aiming for a top three finish in my age category and a top six finish overall.
“It’s an unknown opposition – I’ve done as much research as I can but it’s still unclear what the competition will be like.
“Working under Britain’s strongest man runner-up Graham Hicks is helping me massively and he’s always advising me and in contact to me.
“Andrew Rigby has helped me get to this stage and has coached me through competitions and helped me all the way. Training has gone great too.”
