TOP tenor Russell Watson is the first star headliner to be announced for Lytham Proms 2013.
The 45-year-old from Salford is the UK’s best-selling classical artist, having sold in excess of seven million albums worldwide, and he will play Lytham on Saturday, August 3.
As with the Saturday evening concerts involving Alfie Boe, Katherine Jenkins and Lesley Garrett at Lytham over the past three summers, Russell’s concert will take the form of a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ show, with picnics encouraged and a spectacular firework finale.
Russell, who headlined for Lytham Proms organisers Cuffe and Taylor Management at Liverpool’s Speke Hall last June, will be backed by a 32-piece orchestra, while a special guest will be announced later, as will the Proms headliners for Friday, August 2 and Sunday, August 4.
Peter Taylor of Cuffe and Taylor said: “We always knew Russell would delight the crowds at Speke, but the night far outweighed our expectations.
“The feedback was amazing and thankfully the sun shone on that Bank Holiday back in June, it was a truly magical night.
“Needless to say we are delighted to be able to bring him to Lytham for 2013.”
Russell. whose latest album is entitled Anthems – Music To Inspire A Nation, has sung for British royalty, American presidents, Japanese emperors, an array of European Prime Ministers, Middle-Eastern sultans and even the late Pope John Paul II who requested a private audience with him at the Vatican.
The star tenor has been nominated for album of the year at the 2012 Classic Brit Awards and will also be performing at the ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall next Tuesday.
