Lancashire Road Safety Partnership had been planning to install the new road safety devices on the A583 between Peel and Clifton.

The eight-mile section was the longest single stretch of average speed enforcement planned for the county.

However, following anti-fracking protest on part of the planned section have changed the proposals.

Now average speed cameras will only be installed along a three-mile stretch of the route between Kirkham and Clifton, on the outskirts of Preston.

A spokesman said: “While work has progressed this year, some changes to the initial plans for two of the routes have been reviewed and will now be carried out.

“Due to a temporary speed restriction implemented by Lancashire County Council on a section of the A583 Preston New Road, the camera locations have been revised and changes will be made to shorten the route.

“Cameras will now cover the A583 Preston New Road between Wrea Green roundabout, through Kirkham bypass to Newton-with-Scales, west of Clifton.”

The temporary limit was put in place following an increase in protest activity on the route. The road has been closed on a number of occasions due to lock-on demonstrations carried out by those opposed to Cuadrilla’s construction of a fracking drilling site at Peel. Work continues on other average speed sites, including on the A588 between Preesall and Pilling.

A spokesman said: “The A6 London Road in Preston, went live in March and a further three routes are nearing completion but no firm enforcement dates have been set.

Work is yet to begin on the remaining four routes but all are expected to be completed by the end of 2017.”
