Trekkies plot a course for Blackpool

A new exhibition is set to beam down into the former Dinosaur World site this summer to celebrate the 50th anniversary of sci-fi classic Star Trek.

Bosses behind the interactive attraction say it will display a host of props, sets and artefacts from the ever popular, long running space saga.

Star trek fans and families will be able to see costumes from the six TV series and the 13 films.

People will even be able to go on a replica of the original bridge of the starship Enterprise and sit in Captain Kirk’s chair.

The exhibition is being brought to Blackpool by promoter Paul Gregg who was one of the driving forces behind Mamma Mia and Cats in the resort.

And he said it could attract tens of thousands of new visitors to the town.

He said plans are afoot to link it to other Star Trek events and a new feature for the Illuminations from September 2 which will be seen from many miles into space.

He said: “This is very exciting and will bring something completely new to Blackpool.

“We have worked with Blackpool for many years, from the summer season shows to bringing the successful Mamma Mia and Cats shows, and we have high hopes for the Star Trek exhibition.

“We found the right location and this is the right time, the 50th anniversary of the first show and with the new film coming out this summer and a new TV series.

“We have worked closely with CBS (the US company which owns the TV rights along with Paramount which has the film rights) and we have artefacts from the shows films and collectors.

“We did not have to work too hard to sell Blackpool to CBS. One of the directors’ wives was very familiar with Blackpool. It is a perfect location with potential to link to other events.

“Star Trek has its own very loyal fanbase so we could have a whole new type of visitor but the exhibition will not just be for fans, it will have something for every visitors and will provide another strong attraction for tourists.”

Coun Gillian Campbell, Deputy Leader of Blackpool Council, said: “I am delighted that Blackpool’s Promenade has been chosen as the location for this new attraction. Star Trek is hugely popular around the world so I am sure this exhibition will be prove a big hit with visitors to the resort.

“Our Illuminations team is currently designing a Star Trek themed feature which will be located in a prominent position on Blackpool’s famous Golden Mile.”
