A young man is motoring ahead with his studies after securing vital cash thanks to The Gazette.

Christopher Hubberstey, a young man who needed a kidney transplant and is registered blind, was given £250 from The Gazette’s £10,000 community giveaway earlier this month.

I just wanted to thank you for giving Chris the money to be able to buy himself an iPad to help him with his college work

He wanted an iPad to help his studies.

His mum Jean said: “I just wanted to thank you for giving Chris the money to be able to buy himself an iPad to help him with his college work.

“We went to The Trafford Centre on Saturday and got them to set it up for him with the app for visually-impaired people.

“He is really thrilled with it.

“He passed his college course in Motor Studies and has been accepted on another course at Myerscough to do a BTEC in animal studies. Thank-you once again.”

Chris was one of 36 groups or individuals to benefit from the awards which saw The Gazette team up with the Swallowdale Children’s Trust to help deserving young people for the third year in a row.

The Trust handed out an incredible £25,000 to needy individuals and youth groups in 2013 and another £10,000 was given last year.

The grants are available for groups and individuals under 25 years of age.

Nigel Law, chairman of the Swallowdale Children’s Trust, said: “On behalf of the trustees at the Swallowdale Children’s Trust, I would like to thank The Gazette for working with us for the past three years.

“It was a joyful and uplifting event which brought happiness to lots of young people and voluntary groups across Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. We would welcome further applications to the trust all year round and these applications can be made through our website or on our Facebook page.”
