QUEEN Mary school was NOT opened by King George VI and Queen Mary.
There had been growing confusion during recent weeks about who opened the all girls school all those years ago.

Many Express readers had got in touch thinking that, whilst on their royal vist to St Annes, the royal couple opened the school in 1937.

However, Reflections can this week clear up the confusion once and for all - thanks to a booklet made for the official opening of Queen Mary School on Thursday, November 6, 1930.

The booklet was brought into the Express by Mr and Mrs Simms from St Annes.

It reveals that the school was opened by the Earl of Derby.

Miss D Bailey is listed as the Head Mistress, with E R Lightwood as Chairman of the Governors and S L Stott as his deputy.

Before the opening of the main entrance, people were asked to proceed to the Assembly Hall, wherethe ceremony began at 10.45am.

At the event, Lord Derby was presented with a Key to the school as a souvenir of the occasion.

The booklet also tells the short story of 'The Lytham Schools Foundations.'
