LOWTHER Gardens staged a thrilling finals day for bowling's 2008 Lytham St Annes Express Trophy, which went right down to the wire on Saturday.

Three of the semi-finalists, Terry Wood, Peter Grimston and Derek Clarke, hailed from the St Annes Ex-Service Club.
Although Wood has claimed the Mayor's Trophy in the past, none of the three had risen to take the supreme crown before. The only previous winner was the final qualifier, Bryan Clarke from the East End BC.
Settling recently in the area from Shropshire, Peter Grimston had been made a clear 4-6 favourite with the on course bookie.
His semi-final opponent was second-favourite and Ex-Service team-mate Terry Wood.
Grimston quickly established a lead but the experience of Wood enabled him to claw back the deficit; finally taking the lead at 14-12.
Grimston surged back to establish what seemed a decisive advantage at 20-16. Wood was not yet done as two singles and a double saw the match balanced on a knife edge at 20-20.
With the final place at stake, Grimston grasped the nettle, gratefully scampering home 21-20.
In the second semi-final, last year's runner-up in the Mayor's Trophy, Derek Clarke, had to overcome a former double winner of the Express Trophy in Bryan Clarke.
The East End man opened up a 16-7 margin. The Ex-Service man pulled it back to 18-10 but Bryan Clarke emerged as a 21-10 winner to stake his claim for a place in the final.
Grimston established an early grip on the game Clarke, who clawed his way back into the game to level the match at 13-13. Grimston rallied to storm ahead 20-14.
Two singles were followed by two doubles as Clarke made it 20-20 and an upset was on the cards. But in a match of high drama, Bryan Clarke became a triple winner of the trophy 21-20.
James Riley, from the Lytham St Annes Express, presented prizes to the last eight and handed the coveted trophy and £100 prize to Clarke.
