TWO Fylde golf courses are celebrating this week – after both were chosen to stage major events in 2012.
Fairhaven Golf Club and St Annes Old Links have been asked by the Royal and Ancient to hold the Junior Open Championships and the Local Final Qualifying for the Open Championships respectively. Royal Lytham and St Annes will host the Open itself that year, completing a fantastic July hat-trick for Fylde.
The Junior Open was launched in 2000. All national golf organisations around the world are invited to send a boy or one girl under the age of 16 to compete in the 54-hole event, played every two years.
The tournament, which has featured stars such as Sergio Garcia, will take place just a few days before the Lytham showpiece.
Fairhaven secretary Bob Thompson, is looking forward to a great event. He said: "We are all absolutely delighted to be holding the event here.
"It's being held just a few days before the Open, so we will be getting golf lovers from all over the world, which will make a fantastic atmosphere."
He added: "These kids are the best young players from their country. Children of professional players are also invited to play in the tournament, so we will no doubt have some big names here. It will be a great event."
Just two days after Fairhaven had been asked to host one major event, another local course had cause to celebrate.
St Annes Old Links has historically played host to final qualifying when the Open has been played at Royal Lytham and will do so again in four years' time.
The Old Links was the qualifying course when the Amateur Championship was played at Royal Lytham and St Annes last year.
Old Links captain Tom Parsons said: "We are obviously delighted that the R&A have yet again shown faith in the Old Links to host such a prestigious event.
"The efforts being made at the club to maintain high standards are clearly being rewarded."
