JAMES Grimston won the Mayor's Trophy bowling tournament at St Annes Ex-Service Club for the first time on Saturday, writes GEOFF WORDEN.

The mayor of the Fylde, Coun. Susan Fazackerley, was in attendance to present the prizes at the 84th annual event.
Play commenced at 2pm on a bright summer afternoon and it immediately became apparent that the appreciative audience were in for a feast of bowling on a frighteningly fast green.
Chris Anderson started proceedings in the first semi-final against Peter Grimston. With the advantage of the block, Anderson got off to a flyer to lead 8-1.
Grimston, runner-up in the recent Express Trophy, gained some control, creeping back in singles to 9-7 before another tremendous run took Anderson to the verge of glory at 19-10. He then lost the block as it fell off the tricky green.
Grimston took full advantage and strung together a run down the edge to go 20-19 ahead.
But as in the Express Trophy, Grimston lost out 21-20 at the death in a brilliant game.
Anderson was in the final, bidding the emulate the feat of brother Tom, the 1976 winner.
The second semi-final was a mouth-watering prospect between county players and Ex-Service team-mates, Terry Wood and James Grimston.
James, elder brother of Peter, had been in brilliant form all season, while Wood had won the title twice before, in 1980 and 1986.
In a cat-and-mouse contest, Grimston led 11-9 and then moved up a gear.
Four doubles and two singles took him home in brilliant style.
Wood was only inches away each end but couldn't score and the 21-9 scoreline put Grimston through to his first final.
The final was a clash of styles between the delicate touch play of Grimston and Anderson's longer lengths.
Grimston continued where he had left off, surging into a 6-1 lead.
Anderson bravely changed his style and clawed it back to 9-6 only for Grimston to regain control and stretch his lead to 15-7 with uncanny accuracy.
Anderson tried to hit back but at 18-10 it looked all over.
However, Anderson had other ideas and pulled back to 18-15.
But then a slight slip let Grimston in again and he grabbed the opportunity to seal the title 21-16.
A new name would be carved on the trophy presented to Grimston, along with a cash prize of £100.
