PADRAIG Harrington became the first European to win back-to-back Opens in 102 years when he lifted the Claret Jug at Royal Birkdale on Sunday.
The Irishman took control on his final round, carding a one under par 69.
The challenge from 53-year-old Australian Greg Norman fell away and it became England's Ian Poulter who posed the biggest threat to Harrington over the closing holes.
Poulter was already in the clubhouse and preparing for a play off after shooting a 69.
But a stunning second shot to the green at the 17th set up an eagle chance for Harrington which he duly he took to go four shots clear and effectively seal victory.
There was no Tiger Woods at the championship - but there was the 20-year-old amateur Chris Wood, from Bristol, who won the Silver Medal for the best placed Open amateur, finishing with a marvellous score of 290 for the championship, joint fourth with Jim Furyk.
