Kirkham's sights set on souble
KIRKHAM & WESHAM FC go into tonight's (Thursday) first major cup final of the season full of confidence that they can win the Vodkat Second Division Trophy, writes Howard Jones.
Manager Mick Fuller's side will be at full strength for the trip to Trafford in Manchester to take on Merseysiders Bootle, who they have taken four out of six points from in the league this season.
But boss Fuller admits that the Liverpool side will be no pushovers. He said: "This is one competition we have set our targets on early in the campaign and I see no reason why we cannot add it to all the success we gained in the West Lancs League.
"Bootle are a decent side but they haven't beaten us in two attempts this season and I want us to keep that momentum going."
Bootle have raced to the final of two competitions, just like Kirkham, and while Fuller's side has Wembley on its minds – the FA Vase final against Lowestoft is on May 11 – Bootle have another silverware date themselves in a week's time, when they take on Maine Road (Manchester) in the Vodkat League Cup final at Curzon Ashton.
But both sides will hope that they will have wrapped up one trophy before then Fuller added: "I lot of our players were rested in Monday's 0-0 draw against
Norton United and they will be back on Thursday that's for sure.
"I'm eager that we win this and then remain unbeaten throughout the rest of our games this season."
Kirkham's promotion push should reach a satisfactory conclusion at Castleton Gabriels on Saturday, when victory at the Rochdale-based outfit should be enough to set the champagne corks popping.
Closest rivals Chadderton have a date at championship-chasing New Mills, where nothing other than a win will stop Kirkham from celebrating promotion if they win at Castleton.
The FA Vase finalists travel south on Tuesday for the first of three league games in the Potteries, where they face Norton United in the return league fixture.
But by then Fuller hopes his side will have gained promotion. He added: "That's the aim and I'm sure it will be a case of when we go up, not if."
