Show fit for a lord mayor

THE 84th Mayor's Trophy, the oldest and most historic tournament in local crown green bowling, commences this Saturday at the St Annes Ex-Service Bowling Club.
It was from the inaugural tournament in 1925 that Parks Committee chairman Coun Fred Hayes sowed the seeds which led to the formation of the LSA Men's Bowling League.
The 2007 winner John Rayton will be looking to recover from his recent setback in the LSA Express Trophy.
With an excellent entry of some 75 local bowlers competing, Rayton takes centre stage later in the afternoon, when he gives a massive seven start to Don Oates of Lowther Gardens.
Last year's runner-up Derek Clarke has a tough opening round against 2006 champion Bernard Butler.
The winner of this tie faces a mouthwatering contest against the victor of the clash between Express Trophy runner-up Peter Grimston and his Ex-Service team-mate Dave Worthington.
One of the opening games should whet the appetite as 2004 champion Ron Carradice tries to concede three handicap to Joe Hibberson.
With 11 former winners competing, the 2008 event should prove a memorable one.
As the qualifying rounds involve 58 matches, bowling commences at 9.30am and continues uninterrupted until 6.30pm.
The tournament resumes the following Thursday at 6.30pm, when the last 16 will be reduced to a final four.
The semi-finals commence at 2pm on Saturday week, with the final scheduled to start around 3pm.
Prizes will be presented by the Mayor of Fylde, Coun Susan Fazackerley.
Besides the trophy, the winner receives £100. The runner-up wins £50, losing semi-finalists £25 and quarter-finalists £15.
