Lytham CC got their Liverpool Competition ECB premier league season off to a winning start with a nailbiting win at Rainhill.

Chasing a target of 105 for victory at St Helens, an unbeaten captain’s knock of 48 by Guy Roberts saw Lytham home by a single wicket.

Rainhill were dismissed for 105 in 35.1 overs, no.8 Phil Veacock top-scoring with 35 as Luke Williams took 3-25 off 11 overs and Richard Openshaw 3-25 from nine.

Lytham made heavy weather of the reply, sliding to 25 -4 before Roberts began the recovery mission.

Five Lytham men were dismissed for ducks, including professional Dominic O’Brien, and the final pair were left to score a nervy 16 before victory was sealed in 37.1 overs. Professional Mohamad Aslam took 8-45 from 19.1 overs.

Lytham, beaten by Leigh in the Ray Digman Knockout Trophy the previous week, are on their travels again this Saturday to face New Brighton.

St Annes couldn’t build on that opening win in the
Northern Premier League, dismissed for just 99 en route to a five-wicket defeat at Darwen.

The home side’s decision to field was justified as Chris Wade took 5-32 from 12 overs and George Linde 3-17 from 15.2 as St Annes were all out in the 44th over. Only Lukman Vahaluwala (26) and professional Toby Bulcock (25) reached double figures.

Two wickets apiece for new recruit Mikey Harling and Bulcock could not prevent Darwen reaching their target with 7.3 overs left, no.4 John Cordingley unbeaten on 39.

St Annes welcome Fleetwood to Vernon Road for a Fylde coast derby on
Saturday, though Andy
Kellett’s side sit out out Monday’s second round of bank holiday weekend fixtures in the NPL.
